Materials requested by a class instructor are placed on reserve for circulation to the students in the class. Reserve materials are located at the Main Information Desk at the Grand Rapids Campus - Beltline, and at the 2nd Floor Reception Desk at the Grand Rapids Campus - Downtown. In general, these materials may be used in the facility, but cannot be checked out, because they are needed by many students at the same time.

Grand Rapids students have complete access to all of the University Libraries. As a student of Extended University Programs you have special access to the library's continuing education staff and web site.

This site contains many special helps for those who study outside of Kalamazoo, including online document delivery services (borrow books, photocopies of articles, etc.), reference assistance (ask a question through email), interlibrary loan (when the WMU library does not carry the book or article you need), and many more. You may also travel to Western’s main campus to use the University Libraries. In order to borrow books in person, you must have a current semester Extended University Programs Student Identification & Library Card which is available at both campuses or a WMU ID. In addition to the reference staff, the Weekend Programs Librarian is available to work with students on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday.

The WMU card catalog is available online through WestCat.

The University Libraries provides access to multiple electronic databases for articles, books, journals, and other resources.

To assist in learning the various library computer systems, Off Campus Librarians hold a series of open computer lab sessions each term. Check with the Grand Rapids campuses for dates and registration information. A tutorial is available online for your convenience. Off Campus Librarians also are available to instructors for in-class presentations.

Students may use the services of the public libraries (Grand Rapids and/or Kent County) located in their home areas.  Materials in all public libraries may be used within the library by any visitor, but generally cannot be checked out unless you are a patron of that library. NOTE: Access to academic and special libraries may be limited due to space and staff limitations in these libraries.
